Singer 4423 Review, Is It Good For A Beginner?

The Singer 4423 Review, this is a mechanical sewing machine with a strong motor that is able to sew denim to canvas and some leather, as well as your thinner fabrics, and is considered a heavy-duty machine with its metal frame.

The motor on this machine is 60% stronger when it is compared to your standard sewing machine, and will stitch at 1100 stitches per minute, while other machines in these class sew at about 500 to 800 stitches per minute.

This machine will produce excellent quality stitches with your delicate fabrics, or any thicker materials, and always chose the right needle for the fabrics you’re sewing.

The machine is easy to set up and start sewing with so that any beginner sewer after a little practice could be up and sewing.

Singer 4423 Heavy Duty Sewing Machine Review

We will go through some of the features on this machine, and you can then have a better idea if it would be a good match for your sewing projects, but in short we can say we found this an excellent machine to work in a good selection of projects and it will deliver high quality stitching.

Stitches On the Singer 4423

The machine comes with 23 built-in stitches that can be easily selected by the dial on the right front, and the stitches marked in a blue color are the stretch stitches.

The stitch width and length are both adjustable on this machine with 6 mm being the maximum stitch width, and 4 mm as the maximum stitch length.

There are 12 decorative stitches, 6 basic, 4 stretch, and 1 buttonhole stitch to chose from, with the buttonhole stitch being done in one step which is nice to see.

If you want to tie off the beginning or end of a seam, then just press down on the reverse sewing lever that is located just above the sewing area.

The Bobbin and Threading

To wind the bobbin on this machine, just follow the guides on the top and with the thread through the hole in the bobbin, push the bobbin spindle to the right and press on the foot pedal until bobbin is full, then cut the thread and remove bobbin.

We will mention here that the bobbin winding spindle needs to be to the left for the machine to sew.

This machine has the top loading bobbin so just remove the clear cover plate, and insert the bobbin with the thread coming off counter clockwise, then follow the thread guides and leave about 6 inches of thread towards the back of the plate.

For the top thread, follow the guides down to the needle, and as the machine has the automatic needle threader, it can be used, then leave about 6 inches of thread towards the back of the machine, and also turn the hand wheel towards you to bring up the bobbin thread, and guide both upper and lower thread under the presser foot towards the back.

On the top of the machine is the dial for the thread tension, which is usually set at 4, for most sewing, but you might want to try the machine out on a scrap piece of fabric first to see how the stitches look.

We will also mention that the needle has a dial for you to set the needle in 3 different positions, with the middle position for normal sewing, and left or right position for edge stitching or sewing parallel lines of top stitch.

For any thread cutting there is a manual thread cutter above the sewing area, on the end of the machine, and a handy thread, needle, and fabric chart is in the instruction manual.

Does Singer 4423 Come With A Free Arm?

Yes, it comes with a free arm by removing the extension table which pulls off to the left, you can sew cuffs, sleeves, pants, etc.

The extension table also has an accessory storage container in it for the needles, bobbins, etc.

Lighting

The lights on this machine is just above the work area giving you good vision ability when sewing, and it turns on when the power switch is activated.

How Many Presser Feet Come With The Singer 4423?

For easy changing the feet are the snap on and off type, which can be done in seconds.

When sewing thicker fabrics, the presser foot can be raised to a higher position, and the machine also has an adjustment for the pressure on the foot, and being preset at the company it needs very little adjustment.

Feed Dogs

To lower or raise the feed dogs pull off the extension table, and the switch is located at the back for when you want to do free hand embroidery, quilting or darning.

  1. Nice. Not sure if I would get this myself… The machine looks a bit clunky and almost outdated, haha. I’m sure it’s a perfectly good machine though. Definitely sounds like it’s very versatile, which is nice when you have a machine that lets you do everything… much more cost efficient. Don’t know much about all the technical terms, but it seems pretty solid.

  2. Hello there! This is a very great and concise review of the Singer 4423. I had no idea sowing machines can sow at such a fast pace! 500 to 800 stitches per minute already sounds pretty crazy but 1100 stitches per minute is just impressive. From your description, this does sounds like a very great tool to have. Thanks for creating this article!

  3. Hello , I think is time to replace my old basic Singer sewing Machine, to this Heavy Duty one, I like the idea is much faster with the stitching and i like that it can be use in Leather and more thicker fabric, I’m having that problem with my actual sewing machine.

I’m looking also for a Serger sewing machine, it’s hard to find one that it won’t kill my bank account, but really for a person like me, I’m constantly sewing clothes, curtains, pillow cases and fixing family clothes.

  4. Wow, these are some impressive specs on this Singer sewing machine! Our family has trusted the Singer brand of machines for generations, so it’s naturally the first brand that I consider when looking for a sewing machine. I love that this machine can handle heavier fabrics like canvas and leather and also have a higher stitch count per minute than most machines. Thanks for the recommendation — it seems like a great choice for a heavy-duty machine!
