Best Sewing Machines For Kids

At What Age A Child Can Use A Sewing Machine?

Best Sewing Machines For KidsI was around 8 years old when my mother introduced me to Singer Featherweight sewing machine, I still can remember how my mom spend some time telling me how to work on it. From that day I grew up with an interest for sewing and for sewing machines until today.

As a mom myself, I kept working on a sewing machine as my kids were around, they asked me a few questions about sewing machines and even tried them out for themselves.

Later I had the opportunity to teach sewing to some neighbor kids, so I can say I’ve taught a few kids to sew, and some of them grew up with an interest to keep sewing, and two or three run their sewing business today.

With some experience of seeing a few kids learning the basic of sewing and learning how to work on a sewing machine, I can say there’s no age that can be called the best age to try a sewing machine for the first time.

I should say it depends on the interest of the kid, some kids grow an interest for learning to sew at early age, and some of them are really skilled.

Some kids will get a curiosity to known how a sewing machine works, they might try once or twice and then they will decide this skill is not for them.

I would allow any kid 5, 6, 7 years old to try a sewing machine, but always under the supervision of their parents or a sewer that is willing to spend some time with the kid, a grandma, or a good friend who loves to sew.

When kids reach the age of 8 years old or older, and grow an interest to learn to sew, it will be easier for them and for the sewer who is willing to teach them to sew.

To answer this question, I will say, it depends on of the interest and the will of each kid wanting to learn to see.

What Makes A Good Sewing Machine For Kids?

The important point to answer for this question is to find a sewing machine, with basic features and which can be speed controlled to always keep the safety of the kid first.

One of the first points to check for kids safety is to find a sewing machine that has feet that needs to be screwed on or attached in a solid way, a model with snap on feet are easy for kids finger to get caught while changing feet.

Control speed – you need also to look for a sewing machine with controlled speed, as models with the foot pedal can be tricky to learn to control and can product some accidents catching the kids fingers while sewing.

Models with a control speed button will be a better option for young kids that want to learn to sew.

What Are The Price Of Best Sewing Machine For Kids?

You can find small and basic sewing machines for kids in the market for under $100, these models will help your kid learn the basics of sewing and how to handle a machine with the basic features.

But if you see your kids have a real interest to learn to sew, and to make some projects with the sewing machine, you might be willing to invest up to $200 or a little bit more on a sturdy sewing machine designed to last with a good selection of basic features and will help your kid to grow his/her interest in sewing.

What is A Good Sewing Machine For Really Young Kids?

When really young kids, 4 or 5 years old, who show an interest to work on a sewing machine, but they need to learn the skills to handle a sewing machine without the risk of any accident, I will recommend to get the Cool, it’s not a sewing machine, it works with no thread, and it comes with clear plastic to prevent any finger accidents.

Best Sewing Machines For KidsThe price is affordable and the young kids can make a few sewing projects with it while they learn the basic of sewing and handling a sewing machine.

Once you know your kid wants to learn to sew, you might want to take a look to the best sewing kits for children, so your kid can get the basic sewing tools to work with.

Closing Best Sewing Machines For Kids.

Some kids will grow an interest of learning to sew and to work with a sewing machine, sewing is a great way to grow the creativity on any kid at any age.

Kids will learn some skill that will help them to work on different topics later in life. Some kids will develop a bigger interest in sewing and they might learn how to grow their creativity as they learn to sew.

  1. Thank you for this straight forward review!

My 8yrs daughter is asking me for one sewing machine since last year. I have my concerns in regards to her own safety. One day after work I came home, and got straight to the craft area of my wife to find her using her modern sewing machine like a pro.

She will turn 9next month and I’m thinking about getting one for her and only allow it’s use when her mother gets around (always).

Tje Hello Kitty and the Artic Crystal are my top alternative up to this point.

I wouldn’t like to ruin the surprise by asking her directly (she feels like a grown-up little girl already so the second one would probably be the best option).

    • Hi Juan,

It might have been a big surprise for you to find your daughter your wife’s craft area and using your wife’s sewing machine like a pro.

I see she is already interested to learn to sew, yes the Janome Hello Kitty and the Artic Crystal sewing machines are a good option for her to start sewing.

      Felicidades!

  2. This is a great post. I really like the fact that you emphasize the necessity of high safety in the kids sewing machine, I think it would be a lot of fun while learning to sow, I will personally forward this post to friends who have kids I’m sure they will enjoy reading this.  Keep it up

  3. I am pleasantly surprised to learn that there really are sewing machines that are kid friendly. I was just doing some research on sewing for beginners for my niece. She is about 12 years old and I was telling her how her grandmother, my mom, taught me how to sew so I could fix clothing once I lived on my own. She wants to learn but me and her mom didn’t know what machine to start her on. Thanks to this post, we now do.

    • Hi Robert

12 years old is a good age to learn to sew, I’m sure will do great.

As you mentioned, learning to sew is good for everybody, fixing our own clothing don’t take long and we can save a lot of money and clothing will last long.

Thanks for stopping to visit my blog today.
