Easy Scrunchie DIY – Step by Step
Step 1 – Cut Out Fabric
Before you cut the fabric, prewash fabric and press it, if you’re using any wool fabric or other type of delicate fabric for this tutorial, wash the fabric by hand with cold water and neutral soap, allow the fabric to dry and press with a damp cloth.
To cut the fabric you can use a measuring tape and a good pair of scissors for fabric, but you can also use a patchwork ruler, a rotary cutter, and a cutting mat.
Step 2 – Stitch On The Scrunchie
Fold one end 1/2″ to the back and then fold fabric lengthwise, right side inside, pinch a few pins on the fabric and stitch on along the piece, 1/4″ seam.
Step 3 – Turn Out The Tube
Pin a safety pin on the raw edge end and push it inside the tube, pull the tube inside out, press.
Step 4 – Thread Elastic
Pin a safety pin on one end of the elastic and thread the tube with the elastic.
Step 5 – Sew On Elastic
Most tutorials say you need to tie a knot on the elastic, I prefer to sew on elastic with zigzag stitching.
Step 6 – Stitch On To Close The Scrunchie
Tuck in the raw end in the folded end and stitch on like its shows on the picture below.
Your first scrunchie is finished and it looks amazing!
I’m sure you’ll be making more than one, and you will be making it with all types of fabrics from those beautiful colors and prints on cotton fabric, to delicate silk, linen and even velvet.
How To Wash A Scrunchie?
Scrunchies are easy to wash, you can add them in any laundry machine on a regular cycle, and you can put it in the delicate clothing bag. No need to press after washing.
Avoid to putting them in the dryer as the elastic can be damaged with hot temperatures.
In case, you make a scrunchie with any wool fabric or other delicate fabric, to wash them you need to do it following the same directions for the fabric you used to make it, most delicate fabrics need to be washed at home by hand, with a gentle neutral soap and let it dry on a towel.
