Materials And Supplies

  • 6 pieces of cotton fabric, color A of 3.5 x 3.5 inches
  • 6 pieces of cotton fabric, color B of 3.5 x 3.5 inches
  • 1 piece of cotton fabric, color A or B for the back
  • 1 piece of Velcro
  • Patchwork ruler, rotary cutter and cutting mat

Patchwork Bib Pattern And Tutorial – Step by Step

Step 1 – Cut Out All Fabric Pieces For The Patchwork Bib

Prewash and press the fabric before you cut out all the pieces you need for the baby bib.

With the patchwork ruler, the rotary cutter and the cutting mat, cut out all the pieces you need to make the baby bib.

Lay out all the pieces on your work table and pin the pieces in three strips, this step will help you to stitch on the three strips with ease.

Step 2 – Stitch On The Three Patchwork Strips

Patchwork made with squares is the basic method to make patchwork, and it’s always made stitching on strips made with squares of fabric.

Always stitch on with 1/4″ for the seam.

Press the strips.

Step 3 – Stitch On The Strips Of Squares

Lay the first strip of squares on your work table and lay over it the second strip, right side to right side, match the seams, and pin the two strips together, stitch on you’re sewing machine, 1/4″ seam.

Open and press.

Lay the third strip on the thew strips on one edge, right side to right side, match seams and pin both pieces, stitch on you’re sewing machine, 1/4″ seam, open and press.

When you finish this step, take the measure from this finished piece and cut out the piece of fabric for the back. Same size.

Step 4 – Mark The Pattern On The Back

Lay the patchwork piece on your work table, right side down, and lay over it the baby bib pattern, pin it to the patchwork piece and trace the baby bib with the help of a pencil or a marker for fabrics. Remove the pins and the pattern.

Step 5 – How To Make The Patchwork Baby Bib

Lay on your work table both pieces for the baby bib, the piece made with patchwork and the fabric piece for the back.

In case, you want to add a lining to the bib, you can lay it first on your work table under the fabric piece for the back.

Lay the piece made with patchwork over the fabric piece for the back, right side to right side and pin both pieces.

You can see how the traced bib pattern is shown on the back of the patchwork piece, this will be your stitching guide.

Step 6 – Stitch On The Patchwork Baby Bib

Stitch on with straight stitching pattern (3 or 3.5 mm) and multipurpose presser foot. Don’t forget to leave a gap open to turn the baby bib out.

Step 7 – Trim Off The Baby Bib

With the help of a good pair of scissors for fabric, trim off the baby bib, leave a seam of 5/8″ all around. Clip all rounded seams.

Step 8 – Turn Out The Baby Bib

Turn out the baby bib, and gently push out all the seams with your finger tips or with a round point scissors. Press.

You can notice on the image below the gap is still open.

Step 9 – Top Stitching the Baby Bib

Tuck in the seams in the open gap and pin it or baste it, top stitching the baby bib all around and the gap will be closed also as you do the top stitching, remove the pins or the basting.

Step 10 – Stitch On The Velcro

Stitch on the Velcro on the baby bib, you need to stitch on one piece on each side of the bib, don’t forget to reinforce the stitching.

To sew on Velcro strip on a baby bib is so easy and you don’t need any more tools, and it’s also safer and as the baby gets bigger you always can adjust the Velcro.

How To Wash A Patchwork Baby Bib?

When you make a patchwork baby bib, you know it’s well-made and it can be washed on a washing machine or a regular cycle with regular laundry soap, it might need some pressing after washing.

In case, you used any delicate or other type of fabric, follow the washing instructions for that type of fabric.

On the tutorial, I used only squares, but to make a baby bib you can use any patchwork pattern, and all will look amazing!

If you decide to make the baby bib quilted, you might need to use the Walking Foot to get better results, then you will need a sewing machine that has the walking foot, or you need to check if you’re sewing machine brand has a walking foot you can purchase separately.
