Easy Quilt Patterns For BeginnersIf you already have a list of quilts to make, I will recommend to you, as a beginner you might want to try an easy quilt pattern first, this way you’ll learn about the different sewing and quilting techniques you need to have to make your first quilt

As you keep working on a few small quilting projects, you’ll get more skilled, and before you notice you’ll be ready to start working on your first full size quilt.

Here are my pick for the Easy Quilt Patterns For Beginners To Try

Easy Quilt Patterns For BeginnersSquares Block Quilts

Nothing easier than making a quilt with squares of fabric, all you need to do is to cut the squares of fabric from your fabrics or to buy a package of already cut squares of fabric.

These quilts are made by sewing a number of squares to make a strip and you’ll need to make as many strips of squares as you decide for the size of your quilt.

The next step is to sew those strips of squares together to make the quilt top, press and make the quilting sandwich, and then you will be working on the quilting by hand or with your sewing machine.

Strips Of Fabrics

One of the easiest ways to make a quilt, is to sew strips of fabric to make the top of the quilt, whether you cut the strips out of your fabric or if you buy a Gelly Roll to make it.

As a beginner, you won’t have any problem to sew on one strip of fabric to the next one, same length of the strips, and strips can be a different width or the same width.

On the image, you can see a strip quilt I made for my grandson a few years ago, and once I finished sewing the strips, I added two borders and a small boat applique.

Once you have the top of the quilt made, all you need to do is to make the quilting sandwich and work on the quilting by hand or with your sewing machine.

Log Cabin Quilts

Easy Quilt Patterns For BeginnersOne of the favorite blocks to make a quilt is the Log Cabin, easy to sew and any beginner won’t have any problem to make their first quilt with this block.

The Log Cabin block is a block made of strips cut from different fabrics, save width and you’ll be working to sew each strip as you go.

The Log Cabin block always starts with a small square in the center, and you’ll be working to sew one strip of fabric at a time on each side, the technique is simple, sew one strip of fabric, cut the strip of fabric, open and press, sew the next strip of fabric, you’ll need to continue to work this way until you sew the block as big as you decide to make the block.

To make a quilt, you’ll need to make as many log cabin blocks as the size of the quilt you decide to make.

Nine Patch Block

Easy Quilt Patterns For BeginnersAnother easy block to make for beginners is the Nine Patch Block, a block that is made with nine squares of fabric same size, 4 in one color and 5 in one color.

You’ll be working on each block by making 3 strips of 3 squares each one, you’ll need to follow the pattern of the Nine Patch Block to arrange the squares to make each block.

Intermediate and Advanced Quilt Patterns To Try

As you keep working on making quilts, you’ll get more skilled to try different patterns, a good way to start making an intermediate or advanced pattern could be to try a quilt made of a star pattern.

There are many star patterns to make a quilt, some are easier that others, you always can start with an eight point star made with triangles or like the one I share here with three different templates.

Closing

Easy Quilt Patterns For BeginnersAs a new quilter, the best tip I can give you is to make your first quilt with an easy pattern, and a small size, this way, you will be working on a small quilt that will help you to work from the start to the end with no problem.

As you work on the different steps to make a quilt, you’ll notice that making a quilt is not as hard as you might have thought before.

Keep working on a few small quilts before you try to make a full size quilt, this way you’ll get some experience by working on different patterns and also try to work on the quilting by hand and by machine.

Then, you’ll be ready to make a full size quilt as your next project.

  1. Hi, my mom used to quilts of time. She was pretty good at it. What I really like about them is that they have very authentic appeal to them. I think they would make a great gift. Cuz they have so much sentimental value. That’s in there. Quite nice to look at as well.

  2. This is a very interesting way to start a hobby and I found the information quite helpful but I did not quite understand how to finish the product. After sewing together strips of fabric for the top, how do I finish the product? Maybe I am not the only one who cannot work it out?

When you finish to work on the quilting by hand or by machine, then you need to pick the way to finish it, it can be done with self bidding technique, that is made by trimming the batting fabric and the edge of the top of the quilt, then you can fold twice the edge of the fabric on the back on top and sew to close.

Another method to finish the quilt is to trim the already quilted quilt and sew a bias all around the quilt.

Thanks so much for taking the time to leave your question.

  4. I have to admit, I already found a list of quilts that I’d love to make my self, but you make some really compelling point in that it is often better to start off with easier patterns. That way, you’d get more familiar with the basics of quilting which then makes you more skillful and better equipped to take on bigger and tougher projects. I believe getting acquainted with the above patterns would help speed up the learning process. Great post
